Germination of
Alpinia galanga
Galangal, Greater galangal, Alpinia galanga, Thai ginger, Siamese ginger, Lengkuas

GERMINATION METHOD (direct sow vs start indoors, etc.) Typically propagated from rhizomes rather than seed. PRE-TREATMENT (scarification / stratification / soaking, only if required) None; allow cut rhizomes to dry briefly before planting. SOWING DEPTH Plant rhizomes about 5–10 cm (2–4 in.) deep with buds up. LIGHT REQUIREMENT (light/dark to germinate) Not applicable. TEMP RANGE Warm soils (often ~20–30°C) support sprouting. MOISTURE & MEDIUM Rich but well-drained medium; keep just moist until shoots emerge. DAYS TO GERMINATE Often several weeks. NOTES (dormancy quirks, transplant tips, etc.) Do not overwater dormant rhizomes. Steady warmth improves reliability.
Some of plants may have very have specific germination requirements that may not be covered in these general instructions.
Many seeds require pre-treatment before sowing which we try to list here when we can, but this information may not be present here. Germination times and germination temperatures are to be a guide only. Many factors can DRASTICALLY affect this.
It's always a good idea to research the specific germination requirements from multiple sources for each plant before attempting to grow them from seed.
