Germination of
Aquilegia canadensis
Canada columbine, Eastern red columbine, Wild columbine, Aquilegia canadensis, Red columbine, Rock bell

GERMINATION METHOD (direct sow vs start indoors, etc.) Fall sow outdoors for natural chilling, or cold stratify indoors then sow shallow in trays. PRE-TREATMENT (scarification / stratification / soaking, only if required) Cold moist stratification for a few weeks can speed germination. SOWING DEPTH Barely cover; very shallow. LIGHT REQUIREMENT (light/dark to germinate) Light can aid germination. TEMP RANGE After stratification, 21–24°C (70–75°F). MOISTURE & MEDIUM Even moisture; do not allow drying. DAYS TO GERMINATE About 3–4 weeks. NOTES (dormancy quirks, transplant tips, etc.) Seedlings can be sensitive to transplanting; move carefully. Many plants flower in the second year.
Some of plants may have very have specific germination requirements that may not be covered in these general instructions.
Many seeds require pre-treatment before sowing which we try to list here when we can, but this information may not be present here. Germination times and germination temperatures are to be a guide only. Many factors can DRASTICALLY affect this.
It's always a good idea to research the specific germination requirements from multiple sources for each plant before attempting to grow them from seed.
