Germination of
Bixa orellana
Annatto / Achiote, Lipstick Tree, Bixa, Saffron Tree.
Bixa orellana: Bixa orellana, commonly known as the "Lipstick Tree," is a tropical tree species that is valued for its seeds, which produce a bright red dye commonly used in cosmetics and food coloring. To germinate Bixa orellana, start by soaking the seeds in warm water for 24-48 hours. After soaking, plant the seeds in a well-draining soil mixture in a warm and bright location. The ideal temperature for germination is between 70-85F (21-29C). Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged by misting it regularly. Germination typically occurs within 2-4 weeks. Once the seedlings have grown to a sufficient size, they can be transplanted into larger containers or directly into the ground.
Some of plants may have very have specific germination requirements that may not be covered in these general instructions.
Many seeds require pre-treatment before sowing which we try to list here when we can, but this information may not be present here. Germination times and germination temperatures are to be a guide only. Many factors can DRASTICALLY affect this.
It's always a good idea to research the specific germination requirements from multiple sources for each plant before attempting to grow them from seed.
