Germination of

Dionaea muscipula

Venus Fly Trap: Dionaea Muscipula, Flytrap, Watercup

Dionaea muscipula

For germinating Dionaea muscipula (Venus Flytrap) seeds, you will need a nutrient-poor growing medium that is well-draining and slightly acidic. A mixture of sphagnum peat moss and coarse sand in a 1:1 ratio can be a good choice. Soak the seeds in distilled or rainwater for 24 hours to soften the seed coat. Then, sow the seeds on the surface of the growing medium and cover them with a thin layer of finely chopped sphagnum moss. Cover the container with clear plastic or a glass lid to maintain high humidity levels, and place it under fluorescent lights or in a bright, indirect light location. The temperature should be around 75-85F (24-29C) during the day and 55-65F (13-18C) at night. The seeds should germinate in about 2-4 weeks.

Some of plants may have very have specific germination requirements that may not be covered in these general instructions.

Many seeds require pre-treatment before sowing which we try to list here when we can, but this information may not be present here.  Germination times and germination temperatures are to be a guide only.  Many factors can DRASTICALLY affect this.

It's always a good idea to research the specific germination requirements from multiple sources for each plant before attempting to grow them from seed.
