Germination of

Dioscorea alata

Ube, Purple yam, Dioscorea alata, Winged yam, Water yam, Greater yam

Dioscorea alata

GERMINATION METHOD (direct sow vs start indoors, etc.) Usually grown from tubers/setts/bulbils rather than seed. PRE-TREATMENT (scarification / stratification / soaking, only if required) Pre-sprouting in warm, humid conditions can speed establishment. SOWING DEPTH Plant setts/bulbils about 10 cm (4 in.) deep with sprouts upward. LIGHT REQUIREMENT (light/dark to germinate) Not applicable. TEMP RANGE Warm. MOISTURE & MEDIUM Loose, well-drained soil; keep evenly moist. DAYS TO GERMINATE Often a few weeks in warm conditions. NOTES (dormancy quirks, transplant tips, etc.) Provide strong trellis/support early. Mulch stabilizes moisture and temperature.

Some of plants may have very have specific germination requirements that may not be covered in these general instructions.

Many seeds require pre-treatment before sowing which we try to list here when we can, but this information may not be present here.  Germination times and germination temperatures are to be a guide only.  Many factors can DRASTICALLY affect this.

It's always a good idea to research the specific germination requirements from multiple sources for each plant before attempting to grow them from seed.
