Germination of
Enterolobium cyclocarpum
Elephant ear tree, Devil's ear tree, Monkey ear tree, Enterolobium cyclocarpum, Guanacaste tree, Ear pod tree

GERMINATION METHOD (direct sow vs start indoors, etc.) Start in deep pots/cells with a well-drained mix and warm conditions, then transplant once plugs are rooted. PRE-TREATMENT (scarification / stratification / soaking, only if required) Physical dormancy is common; mechanical scarification (sandpapering a spot) is widely reported to greatly improve and speed germination. Hot-water treatments are also used but results vary. SOWING DEPTH Sow about 1–2 cm deep. LIGHT REQUIREMENT (light/dark to germinate) No special requirement. TEMP RANGE Warm conditions speed germination. MOISTURE & MEDIUM Keep evenly moist but not saturated; excellent drainage reduces rot after scarification. DAYS TO GERMINATE With scarification, many seeds sprout within ~1–2 weeks. NOTES (dormancy quirks, transplant tips, etc.) Give strong light after emergence. Transplant when the root system holds the plug together; avoid letting pots dry out while small.
Some of plants may have very have specific germination requirements that may not be covered in these general instructions.
Many seeds require pre-treatment before sowing which we try to list here when we can, but this information may not be present here. Germination times and germination temperatures are to be a guide only. Many factors can DRASTICALLY affect this.
It's always a good idea to research the specific germination requirements from multiple sources for each plant before attempting to grow them from seed.
