Germination of
Helianthus annuus 'Claret'
Claret Sunflower: Red sunflower, common sunflower, swamp sunflower, Jerusalem artichoke, Indian blanket, oxeye sunflower
To germinate Helianthus annuus 'Claret', begin by preparing a well-draining soil mix of equal parts peat moss, perlite, and vermiculite. Sow the seeds 1/2 inch deep and 6 inches apart in rows. Water the soil and keep it moist but not saturated. Keep the soil temperature around 70-75F during the day and 60-65F at night. The germination process usually takes around 7-10 days. Once the seedlings have grown to around 3 inches in height, thin them out to 1-2 feet apart.
Some of plants may have very have specific germination requirements that may not be covered in these general instructions.
Many seeds require pre-treatment before sowing which we try to list here when we can, but this information may not be present here. Germination times and germination temperatures are to be a guide only. Many factors can DRASTICALLY affect this.
It's always a good idea to research the specific germination requirements from multiple sources for each plant before attempting to grow them from seed.
