Germination of
Helianthus tuberosus
Jerusalem artichoke, Sunchoke, Helianthus tuberosus, Sunroot, Earth apple, Topinambur

GERMINATION METHOD (direct sow vs start indoors, etc.) Commonly propagated from tubers rather than true seed. PRE-TREATMENT (scarification / stratification / soaking, only if required) None; if cutting tubers, let cut surfaces dry briefly. SOWING DEPTH Plant tubers about 10–15 cm (4–6 in.) deep. LIGHT REQUIREMENT (light/dark to germinate) Not applicable; choose a sunny site. TEMP RANGE Plant in spring; shoots emerge as soils warm. MOISTURE & MEDIUM Well-drained soil; keep moderately moist until shoots emerge. DAYS TO GERMINATE Shoots often appear within a few weeks. NOTES (dormancy quirks, transplant tips, etc.) Can spread; choose site accordingly and mark rows to avoid disturbing emerging shoots.
Some of plants may have very have specific germination requirements that may not be covered in these general instructions.
Many seeds require pre-treatment before sowing which we try to list here when we can, but this information may not be present here. Germination times and germination temperatures are to be a guide only. Many factors can DRASTICALLY affect this.
It's always a good idea to research the specific germination requirements from multiple sources for each plant before attempting to grow them from seed.
