Germination of
Indigofera tinctoria
True indigo, Indigofera tinctoria, Indigo plant, Indian indigo, Dye indigo, Blue dye plant

GERMINATION METHOD (direct sow vs start indoors, etc.) Start indoors in larger cells/pots or direct sow into warm soil. Provide strong light after emergence. PRE-TREATMENT (scarification / stratification / soaking, only if required) Light scarification can improve and speed germination; soaking after scarification can help. SOWING DEPTH About 3–6 mm (⅛–¼ in.) deep. LIGHT REQUIREMENT (light/dark to germinate) Not critical for germination. TEMP RANGE Warm; around 21–24°C (70–75°F) is commonly recommended. MOISTURE & MEDIUM Keep evenly moist but not wet; use well‑drained medium. DAYS TO GERMINATE Often 1–3+ weeks. NOTES (dormancy quirks, transplant tips, etc.) Transplant gently—seedlings may form a delicate taproot. Pot on before roots circle.
Some of plants may have very have specific germination requirements that may not be covered in these general instructions.
Many seeds require pre-treatment before sowing which we try to list here when we can, but this information may not be present here. Germination times and germination temperatures are to be a guide only. Many factors can DRASTICALLY affect this.
It's always a good idea to research the specific germination requirements from multiple sources for each plant before attempting to grow them from seed.
