Germination of

Laurus nobilis

Bay laurel, Laurus nobilis, Sweet bay, Grecian laurel, True bay, Laurel leaf

Laurus nobilis

GERMINATION METHOD (direct sow vs start indoors, etc.) Start in pots with a free‑draining mix; keep sheltered and bright. PRE-TREATMENT (scarification / stratification / soaking, only if required) Use fresh seed and remove all fleshy material. Improved results are often reported with stratification (method varies by seed condition). SOWING DEPTH About 1–2 cm deep. LIGHT REQUIREMENT (light/dark to germinate) Not critical. TEMP RANGE Stratify as needed, then move to moderate warmth. MOISTURE & MEDIUM Even moisture; avoid soggy media. DAYS TO GERMINATE Often slow—weeks to months. NOTES (dormancy quirks, transplant tips, etc.) Poor germination is often linked to old seed. Keep pots labeled and maintain steady moisture over time.

Some of plants may have very have specific germination requirements that may not be covered in these general instructions.

Many seeds require pre-treatment before sowing which we try to list here when we can, but this information may not be present here.  Germination times and germination temperatures are to be a guide only.  Many factors can DRASTICALLY affect this.

It's always a good idea to research the specific germination requirements from multiple sources for each plant before attempting to grow them from seed.
