Germination of
Mitchella repens
Partridgeberry, Squaw vine, Twinberry, Running fox, Deerberry, Mitchella repens

GERMINATION METHOD (direct sow vs start indoors, etc.) Start in containers because seedlings are slow and irregular. Sow cleaned seed into a fine medium and keep humid during stratification. PRE-TREATMENT (scarification / stratification / soaking, only if required) Moist cold stratification is typically required and can be lengthy; some protocols improve results with warm/cold cycles. Sow fresh when possible and remove all fruit pulp thoroughly. SOWING DEPTH Sow just under the surface or barely covered. LIGHT REQUIREMENT (light/dark to germinate) Bright shade; light can help once moved to germination temperatures. TEMP RANGE Stratify cool (~4–5°C / 39–41°F), then shift to warm (~20–22°C / 68–72°F). MOISTURE & MEDIUM Keep consistently moist throughout stratification and germination—do not allow drying. DAYS TO GERMINATE After the warm shift, germination may begin in ~30–90 days, but it can continue sporadically much longer. NOTES (dormancy quirks, transplant tips, etc.) Do not discard trays early—extended, irregular germination is common. Transplant very carefully; seedlings are delicate.
Some of plants may have very have specific germination requirements that may not be covered in these general instructions.
Many seeds require pre-treatment before sowing which we try to list here when we can, but this information may not be present here. Germination times and germination temperatures are to be a guide only. Many factors can DRASTICALLY affect this.
It's always a good idea to research the specific germination requirements from multiple sources for each plant before attempting to grow them from seed.
