Germination of
Myrica rubra
Yumberry / Chinese Bayberry: Myrica Rubra, Yangmei, Chinese Strawberry Tree, Red Bayberry
Myrica rubra, also known as yangmei or Chinese bayberry, is a fruit tree that is native to East Asia. To germinate the seeds, start by soaking them in room temperature water for 24-48 hours. Then, place the seeds in a plastic bag filled with moist peat moss or vermiculite and seal the bag. Store the bag in the refrigerator for 4-6 weeks, then remove from the fridge and plant the seeds in a well-draining potting mix. Cover the seeds lightly with the mix and keep the soil moist but not waterlogged. Provide bright, indirect light and maintain a warm, humid environment. Germination can take anywhere from 1 to 3 months.
Some of plants may have very have specific germination requirements that may not be covered in these general instructions.
Many seeds require pre-treatment before sowing which we try to list here when we can, but this information may not be present here. Germination times and germination temperatures are to be a guide only. Many factors can DRASTICALLY affect this.
It's always a good idea to research the specific germination requirements from multiple sources for each plant before attempting to grow them from seed.
