Germination of

Nicotiana sylvestris

Ghost Pipes tobacco, Nicotiana Ghost Pipes, Flowering tobacco, Ornamental tobacco, Nicotiana alata type, Night-scented tobacco

Nicotiana sylvestris

GERMINATION METHOD (direct sow vs start indoors, etc.) Start indoors 5–6 weeks before planting out, or direct sow once conditions are settled. Sow on a fine, leveled surface. PRE-TREATMENT (scarification / stratification / soaking, only if required) None required. SOWING DEPTH Surface sow and press in; cover only with the lightest dusting, if at all. LIGHT REQUIREMENT (light/dark to germinate) Light aids germination. TEMP RANGE Warm germination; about 22–26°C (72–78°F). MOISTURE & MEDIUM Keep evenly moist (mist or bottom-water). Use a sterile seed-start mix and avoid surface crusting. DAYS TO GERMINATE Commonly 7–21 days. NOTES (dormancy quirks, transplant tips, etc.) Provide strong light once up to prevent legginess. Transplant once seedlings have several true leaves.

Some of plants may have very have specific germination requirements that may not be covered in these general instructions.

Many seeds require pre-treatment before sowing which we try to list here when we can, but this information may not be present here.  Germination times and germination temperatures are to be a guide only.  Many factors can DRASTICALLY affect this.

It's always a good idea to research the specific germination requirements from multiple sources for each plant before attempting to grow them from seed.
