Germination of
Ravenala madagascarensis
Traveler's Palm: Ravenala madagascariensis, palmiste, travellers tree
Ravenala madagascarensis, also known as the Traveler's Palm, is a tropical plant that is native to Madagascar. The seeds of this plant are large and should be planted as soon as possible after harvesting. Start by preparing a well-draining soil mix of equal parts of peat moss, perlite, and vermiculite. Sow the seeds on the surface of the mix and cover them lightly with a thin layer of the mix. Water the soil gently and cover the pot with plastic wrap or a clear lid to create a humid environment. Place the pot in a warm spot with bright, indirect sunlight. Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged. Germination can take several weeks to several months.
Some of plants may have very have specific germination requirements that may not be covered in these general instructions.
Many seeds require pre-treatment before sowing which we try to list here when we can, but this information may not be present here. Germination times and germination temperatures are to be a guide only. Many factors can DRASTICALLY affect this.
It's always a good idea to research the specific germination requirements from multiple sources for each plant before attempting to grow them from seed.
