Germination of

Sambucus cerulea / Sambucus nigra subsp. Cerulea

Blue elderberry, Sambucus cerulea, Western elderberry, Blueberry elder, Pacific elder, Mexican elder

Sambucus cerulea / Sambucus nigra subsp. Cerulea

GERMINATION METHOD (direct sow vs start indoors, etc.) Sow in pots/trays for long stratification management, or fall sow outdoors. PRE-TREATMENT (scarification / stratification / soaking, only if required) Warm stratification followed by cold stratification is commonly recommended. After stratification, move to moderate warmth; light can improve germination. SOWING DEPTH About 6 mm (¼ in.) deep. LIGHT REQUIREMENT (light/dark to germinate) Light can help after stratification. TEMP RANGE Warm phase → cold phase → moderate warmth for sprouting. MOISTURE & MEDIUM Consistently moist; monitor for mold during long stratification. DAYS TO GERMINATE Often begins weeks after completion of treatments; can remain irregular. NOTES (dormancy quirks, transplant tips, etc.) Keep trays for a full season if germination is sparse—late sprouting is common.

Some of plants may have very have specific germination requirements that may not be covered in these general instructions.

Many seeds require pre-treatment before sowing which we try to list here when we can, but this information may not be present here.  Germination times and germination temperatures are to be a guide only.  Many factors can DRASTICALLY affect this.

It's always a good idea to research the specific germination requirements from multiple sources for each plant before attempting to grow them from seed.
