Germination of

Stenocereus stellatus 'Blanco'

Organ pipe cactus, White organ-pipe cactus, Pitaya de mayo, Stenocereus, Columnar pitaya, Stenocereus stellatus

Stenocereus stellatus 'Blanco'

GERMINATION METHOD (direct sow vs start indoors, etc.) Start indoors in shallow trays for cactus seed using a sterile, fine, mineral-forward mix. PRE-TREATMENT (scarification / stratification / soaking, only if required) None typically required; cleanliness is more important than treatment. SOWING DEPTH Surface sow; press lightly into the surface. Do not bury. LIGHT REQUIREMENT (light/dark to germinate) Bright light helps; many cactus seeds germinate better with light than darkness. TEMP RANGE Warm days: about 25–30°C (77–86°F). Mild day/night fluctuation can help. MOISTURE & MEDIUM Keep evenly moist in a covered tray/bag to prevent drying. Vent as needed to limit algae and mold. DAYS TO GERMINATE Often 1–4 weeks; some may take longer. NOTES (dormancy quirks, transplant tips, etc.) Gradually acclimate seedlings to lower humidity over weeks. Avoid direct hot sun on covered trays to prevent overheating.

Some of plants may have very have specific germination requirements that may not be covered in these general instructions.

Many seeds require pre-treatment before sowing which we try to list here when we can, but this information may not be present here.  Germination times and germination temperatures are to be a guide only.  Many factors can DRASTICALLY affect this.

It's always a good idea to research the specific germination requirements from multiple sources for each plant before attempting to grow them from seed.
